Nikki groaned to herself as she felt the familiar triple tap on her shoulder. She twisted her lips to the side before turning and placing herself in her boyfriend, Leif Matthews, arms. He held her around the waist and gave her a light hug. Nikki bit back a frustrated growl when he slipped his hand lower to her rear end.

“Good morning beautiful.” Leif flashed a half smile. Nikki slapped his hand before pushing herself away. She crossed her arms over her chest and scowled. Leif rested one hand against the lockers by her ear before leaning forward.

“What are you doing?” Nikki demanded. Leif slowly leaned back and looked at her with chagrin. His grin slipped away and his jaw clenched.

“Kissing my girlfriend?” Leif questioned more than stated.

“School hasn’t even started yet.” She scolded before turning her back. After smoothing out her white dress shirt and black Bermuda shorts, she finished turning the dial on the lock to her locker with a quick flick of her wrist.

“This means that the PDA rule isn’t in effect.” He rebuttaled and brushed some of her hair away from her neck. Nikki felt his breath and tensed up for a second before flinging her locker open and leaning inside.

“You know I don’t like to-“she started. Leif interrupted with a heavy sigh.

“Lighten up.” Leif watched as she pulled out her books for first period. When he was sure that she had the books she needed, he reached by her and closed the door. “I want to make sure that everyone knows you’re mine.” His pitch dropped and sugary sweetness was added.

One corner of Nikki’s lip curled upwards before dropping back down. “They can do that by reading our FaceSpace profiles.” She informed him. After slipping her lock back on her locker door she gave Leif a light hug. He didn’t let go.

“Leif.”  She warned. He placed a finger underneath her chin, titled her head back, and kissed her. Nikki wanted to push him away but her arms were locked behind his back. As each second passed, Leif’s firm lip pressed harder and harder.

If he doesn’t get off me in the next five seconds, I swear I’ll break his foot with my high heeled boot.

As Nikki finished her thought, something hard slipped past her forehead and down her nose, leaving a hot trail of throbbing pain behind it. The feel of Leif’s lips was gone and she felt herself lip locked with something flat.

Leif pulled away and rubbed his now reddening nose. “Ow, what the-“

“Oh great.” Nikki muttered under hear breath. “Good morning Ms. McGregor.” She said in a sing-songy voiced.

Ms. McGregor stood in between the two teenagers with a clip board in her hand. As usual, she was dressed in business attire. Her hair was pulled back into a high ponytail and she wore a no-nonsense look on her face.

“Matthews and Turner. Why am I not surprised?” Ms. McGregor rocked back and forth on her heels. “Do I have to remind you two of the PDA rules again?”

“School hasn’t started.” Leif pointed out.

“But you are standing on school property, are you not?” Ms. McGregor raised an eyebrow. She chuckled slightly as Leif was at a loss for words. “Unless you’d like a detention keep the ‘sucking face’ or whatever you all call it these days, to a minimum.” She instructed before continuing down the hallway.

“Geez, what’s up with her?” Leif questioned. Nikki grunted and shrugged.

Ms. McGregor turned on her heel to face them as she continued to walk backwards. “You two may think you’re the cutest couple but not everyone agrees.”

“Look out everyone,” Nikki shouted. “Cass the Ass is on a rampage.” Whether Ms. McGregor heard the insult or not, she didn’t let on as she continued her way down the hall.

“What is it with you two?” Leif questioned. He slipped his arm around her waist and pulled her close. “It’s like you’re her target.” He commented.

Nikki clicked her tongue twice but remained silent as they walked down the hall towards homeroom.

“I swear, if I am stuck with the same kids next year I’m switching schools.” Cassandra McGregor groaned as she took her coffee mug and sat down on a couch with a sigh. The smell of roasted coffee beans relaxed her a bit.

“Come on Cassie, you know you love these kids and you love this school.” Principal Emily Cartwright eased onto the couch next to her.

“Yes, that’s true,” Cassie nodded slowly. “But I just can’t deal with all of their shenanigans anymore.”

“Today marks the start of Pride Week.” Emily responded with a smile. “You know how the students get. I have at least four in my office everyday during this week.”

“That doesn’t make an excuse for Matthews and Turner.”

“What did they do this time?” Emily groaned.

“They were practically making out in the hallway.” Cassie made a face.

“Why do you two dislike each other so much?” Emily questioned. “It’s like you are at each other’s throats all the time.” She added.

“I don’t even remember when it started; we just have never gotten along.” Cassie shrugged.

“Well you only have one more year with her.” Emily reminded her.

“Unless this year kills me.”

“Just take it easy on her.” Emily said slowly. “Nikki…is a special person.”

“Right, special.” Cassie rolled her eyes. She quickly swallowed the rest of her coffee as the school’s bell system pealed out a long note. “There’s the bell.”

The crowd at the basketball game was giving Nikki a headache. She didn’t like attending basketball games but because Leif is the star of the team, she promised him she would attend, and was regretting every minute of it. The girls around her were too busy chatting up their friends and eyeing their crushes that they weren’t paying attention.

The guys around her were shouting and yelling so loud it was as if they had money on the game. Nikki made sure she steered clear of the parents. They were either shouting at the referees and or their children for some mistakes she didn’t understand.

Leif was glistening with sweat. He was leading his team in a 36-28 lead. His coach had just given the team a time out. Leif lifted his eyes towards the stands and winked over at Nikki. She gave the smallest of half smiles before picking up a book and opening it to a marked page.

“What are you doing?” a blonde girl questioned. Nikki rolled her eyes behind her book and checked the time on her watch before slowly putting it down to come face to face with the girl.

“Reading.” She answered slowly.

“It’s a basketball game, your boyfriend is playing…and you’re reading?” the blonde sneered at the book.

“Yeah, so?” Nikki blinked twice but otherwise remained emotionless. “What do you want Brandi?”

“Why does he put up with you?” Nikki noticed that Brandi’s friends were dressed exactly like her but in various other colors. “I’m sure there’s someone better he could be with.”

“I’m assuming you mean yourself?” Nikki raised an eyebrow and narrowed her brown eyes.

“Of course.” Brandi giggled and twirled a lock of hair around her finger. Her friends did the same. “At least I have a sense of style. You wear practically the same thing every day.” She pinched the bottom of her black shorts and rubbed it between her fingers.

Nikki took her book and slammed it onto the back of the girl’s hand. She shrieked, albeit louder than she needed too, and rubbed the back of her hand as Nikki grabbed her bag and abruptly stood up.

As Brandi’s friends, and a couple of guys, looked at the rapidly swelling hand, Nikki brushed by a few spectators as she made her way towards the stairs. She was only a few steps away before she stepped on something somewhat soft that almost sent her to the floor.

“Ouch.” Ms. McGregor cried and grabbed her foot. She looked over at Nikki and huffed before rolling her eyes. “This is the time where you say I’m sorry.”

“I’m sorry…for stepping on your big feet.” Nikki clicked her tongue before heading down the stairs. She watched as Leif made a layup which brought the game to a score of 38-28 before stepping out of the gym into the hallway.

“Oh man, I thought the game would never end.” Cassie moaned as she and Emily descended the bleacher stairs. “I hope this clean up goes quickly. I don’t know how much longer I can be on my foot thanks to Nikki.”

“How’s your ranch coming?” Emily questioned as she slowed her pace. She and Cassie reached the

“Things are steady like they are every year.” She explained. “My place has been in the family for so long I’m actually starting to lose a bit of money keeping it afloat because of repairs.”

“You still won’t sell it?”

“Absolutely not,” Cassie’s already wide eyes widened a bit more as she shook her head. “There’s history to it.”

“And some baggage.” Emily added quietly.

Cassie leaned against the wall and panted. A look of sorrow flashed across her eyes for a split second. “Yeah well that too.” She muttered as she surveyed the gym floor. Empty containers of popcorn, boxes of candy, and spilled sodas littered the bleachers and the sidelines. “This is going to take a while.”

“Let’s go get some brooms.” Emily suggested. She opened the double doors from the gym to the hallway and held them open so Cassie could limp past.

“What’s that sound?” Cassie stopped in her tracks. She tilted her head to the side before following the sound into the girl’s locker room.

“It sounds like a shower.” Emily commented. She brushed past Cassie and led the way towards the back of the room where the showers were located.

“How hard is it to turn the shower off after you’re done using it?” Cassie muttered. She ignored the pain in her foot and quickened her pace. The blinked and waved her hand next to her neck when she was hit with steam and humidity.

Wait, there are some clothes here.” Emily pointed out the crumpled pile of clothing on the floor. She picked them up and placed them onto the bench so they wouldn’t get wet.

“Who’s in there?” Cassie demanded. She heard a light gasp and then nothing. “You know you’re not supposed to be here after hours.” She added.

There was no response.

“Let’s go, come on.” She clapped her hands twice.

Still no response.

“Oh for crying out loud.” Cassie groaned. She reached out and threw the shower curtain aside before backing up not to get hit with water.

“Nikki.” Emily gasped. Cassie looked at her and frowned before following her gaze.

“Oh my gosh” Cassie muttered as she stared down at her body on the bottom of the shower. Her eyes were closed and she wasn’t breathing. Nikki’s damp black hair covered part of her face. Cassie reached into the shower and turned the water off.

“I’ll go call an ambulance.” Emily turned and quickly ran out of the shower area.
